Schneider family

   family of industrialists

   Eugène Schneider (1805-75), born in Bidestroff, was the owner of the Bazeilles (Ardennes) steel mill. In 1836, with his brother Adolf Schneider (1802-45), he took over the steel works of Creusot (founded in 1788 by ignace wendel) and established the Société Schneider Frères et Cie, whose factories were considered among the most advanced of the era (they built the first steam locomotive in 1838). A liberal deputy in 1845, minister of trade and agriculture in 1851, and member of the Legislative Corps during the second empire, Schneider was responsible for several pieces of social legislation. Henri Schneider (1840-98), his son, was born in La Creusot and served as director of the Société Schneider Frères et Cie. He developed the manufacturing of mechanical engineering devices and armaments, while pursuing the social works of his father. Eugéne Schneider (1868-1942), the son of Henri Schneider, with his own son Charles Schneider (1898-1960), helped to develop and modernize the Creusot factories.
